Since the beginning of this year, the Chinese and Russian militaries have been actively operating in the seas and airspace surrounding Japan using intelligence-gathering ships and aircraft.
As for the Chinese Navy, on the 24th, a Dongdiao-class intelligence-gathering vessel sailed southeast between Okinawa and Miyakojima, heading toward the Pacific Ocean.
As for the Russian Navy, a Vishnya-class intelligence-gathering vessel sailed south through the Tsushima Strait on the 7th and continued to sail for an extended period around the Sakishima Islands and Okinawa Island from the 12th to the 24th. This is the first time that such a circumnavigation has been confirmed and made public.
Also, as previously reported, in the skies, a Russian military intelligence-gathering aircraft, the IL-20, flew over the Sea of Japan to the coast of Kyoto Prefecture on the 23rd. On the 26th, the same aircraft flew over the Pacific Ocean to the coast of Tohoku.
Given the characteristics of the vessels and aircraft involved, it is possible that these activities are intended to gather some kind of information. The Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces are responding swiftly to these developments, with units across the country conducting surveillance and scrambling fighter jets, as shown in the diagram below.
The Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces will continue to monitor with great interest the movements of the Chinese and Russian militaries in the seas and airspace surrounding Japan at all times and will take all possible measures to ensure surveillance and other activities
